What Is an Agent? And Why Should You Care Right Now?

You’ve probably heard people talking about “AI agents” recently. If it sounds like just another bit of tech jargon, I understand. But this one is worth paying attention to because it’s going to change how you run your business – and sooner than you might think.

Let me explain what agents actually are, why they matter right now, and what you can do about it today.

PERSPECTIVE

Editorial

The deepest known gorge in the solar system is Valles Marineris on Mars. At a whopping 4,000km in length, it reaches depths of up to 11 kilometres below the surrounding plateau.

But it’s a scratch on the landscape compared to the opinions on AI amongst the small business community on Facebook.

The main source of contention seems to be that many people think using AI for business means generated text and images in marketing materials. While the pro-AI voices are keen to point out there’s a lot more to it than content generation.

I can see where the confusion comes from. Six months ago, content generation really was the most accessible use of AI – and it’s still a common use case that works well when done right. But things have changed. We’ve gone from AI that gives you advice to AI that actually does things for you. Those are called agents, and that’s why I’ve made them the focus of this week’s featured post.

An agent sounds simple at first glance. It’s just an AI that can do things instead of just giving advice. But they open up so many possibilities, good and bad, that they can’t be ignored.

I’ll be honest – this is one of those rare cases where I’m not just saying “here’s something useful you could try.” No matter where you stand on AI, you need to understand what agents are and what they can do. Not just for the benefits to your business, but because if you don’t, you could find yourself falling behind quite quickly.

It’s not a message I love giving. I’d rather focus on the positive stuff – and the good news is, there’s plenty of it. The possibilities here are genuinely exciting.

Keep exploring!
